Blog 8: Harris says there is 'not a thing' she would have done differently: Foxnews vs. CNN

An informational YouTube video that goes into detail CNN’s outlook on Kamala’s statement: CNN destroys Kamala Harris following recent claim on The View

As much as I might hate to admit it, I am on Tik Tok quite often. Most of my feed is centered around politics, so I see many videos based around current trends and popular statements from the two candidates. In this week’s blog post, I want to dive into how Kamala Harris was recently on The View and she was asked if she would have done anything differently than President Biden in the past four years. Her answer was shocking in that she said ‘not a thing comes to mind’ that she would have done differently. After reading both the FoxNews and CNN articles on this, I am shocked to see how CNN is actually taking a more republican side to this statement of hers. It is pretty evident that almost every American is upset that she provided that answer, so I think it is important to understand why that is and how CNN and FoxNews are similar in coverage on this matter.

In the FoxNews article, Kamala Harris tells 'The View' she can't think of anything she would have done differently from Biden | Fox News, there is a recounting of this interview and how detrimental this is for the Harris campaign. For example, “The Trump campaign and the former president's running mate circulated the clip following Harris' interview. Vance wrote on X, "Kamala Harris is more of the same. She admits it herself" (Panreck, 2024). This goes to show how crucial it is that each candidate carefully watches their words, because many are wondering if Harris’ answer will cost her a great portion of voters.

The CNN article, Harris struggles to differ from Biden: Could it hurt her campaign? | CNN Politics, shows a video where six political figures and commentators are discussing this interview from The View. A part that stuck out to me was Scott Jennings and Kara Swisher’s debate over how Harris has separated herself from Biden. It is clear that there is a disagreement and it is honestly surprising to see that CNN has broadcasted a situation that covers a more republican point of view. They speak on whether it is smart for Harris to separate herself from Biden or not and how successful she has been in completing that task. The ultimate problem for those debating and for voters is: What is Harris going to do in the next four years that is different from the last four years?

Do you think it is interesting that CNN shared this story and is presenting both sides of the argument? How might Kamala’s statement impact voting?

Comments

  1. It’s definitely interesting that CNN, known for leaning more liberal, is presenting both sides of this issue and airing criticisms of Harris’s statement. This could reflect the media’s increasing recognition that audiences want balanced perspectives, especially when evaluating candidates’ accountability. Kamala Harris’s comment about not doing anything differently than Biden may indeed impact her campaign, as it reinforces the perception that her administration would be a continuation of the current one. With many Americans expressing frustration over certain policies and challenges over the past few years, her inability to distinguish herself might discourage undecided or dissatisfied voters from supporting her. To gain traction, she may need to show a clear vision that addresses the public’s concerns and offers some fresh solutions.

  2. You bring up a compelling point about Kamala Harris’ interview on The View and the media’s contrasting reactions to her statement. Harris’ claim that she wouldn’t have done anything differently from President Biden certainly sparked a lot of backlash, as it suggested a lack of independent action or vision for the future, which could be concerning for voters seeking change. The fact that both Fox News and CNN covered this in ways that highlight differing angles is a testament to how media outlets can shape public perception, depending on their editorial stance.

The Fox News coverage, which frames Harris' statement as a potentially damaging admission, underscores the political risk in showing unwavering loyalty to Biden's policies. This could easily be weaponized by her political opponents, particularly in a race where candidates are trying to stand out with new ideas and solutions. The emphasis on the Trump campaign circulating the clip highlights how politically charged these interviews have become, with every word scrutinized for its potential to sway undecided voters.
