Blog 9: Claiming to be Objective?: FoxNews vs. CNN

In this week’s blog, I thought it might be interesting to dive into the current reality of the two channels and just how CNN became seen as a liberal channel in comparison to how FoxNews became known as a republican network. I am presenting a study on how, why, and when CNN and FoxNews started to become so partisan-based.

CNN has often been characterized as having a liberal or center-left political bias, especially in its coverage of political events and figures. One way CNN’s liberal leanings manifest is through its framing of key issues and its interpretation of the political climate. The network tends to cover social justice issues such as climate change, healthcare reform, and racial inequality with a focus on progressive policies. During major political events, such as the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, CNN’s coverage was seen as more sympathetic towards their policies, often presenting the Republican opposition in a critical light. Additionally, CNN has a history of providing a platform for liberal-leaning commentators and analysts. Prominent figures such as Van Jones, a former Obama administration official, and political commentators like Donna Brazile and Paul Begala have contributed to the network’s programming. Each of these individuals offered perspectives aligned with the Democratic Party. The tone of CNN’s commentary often reflects a liberal stance on issues such as gun control, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigration reform, aligning it with the values typically associated with the left-wing of the political spectrum. CNN's news coverage is also known for its critical approach to conservative figures and policies, especially during the tenure of Donald Trump as president. The network frequently scrutinized Trump’s actions and rhetoric, focusing on his divisive policies, and, at times, adopting an adversarial stance towards his administration. This critical approach has fueled the perception of CNN as a bastion for liberal opinions, especially in contrast to the more favorable treatment of Republican leaders on other networks like Fox News.

Fox News has built a reputation as the primary news outlet for conservative and Republican viewpoints. The network’s alignment with conservative values is most evident in its prime-time opinion programming, which features hosts like Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, and Laura Ingraham. These hosts, known for their outspoken conservative views, have a significant influence on the network's direction, promoting a pro-Republican agenda and often advocating for conservative policy positions. Fox News has consistently championed the interests of the Republican Party, particularly under the leadership of Rupert Murdoch, who has been known for his strong conservative leanings. The network has closely aligned itself with key Republican figures and policies, often framing stories in a way that defends Republican actions and critiques Democratic approaches. For example, Fox News gave extensive coverage to the Tea Party movement in the early 2010s and supported the Trump administration, especially during its first years. The network's commentary frequently portrayed Republican policies as solutions to national problems, while Democratic policies were often depicted as overreaching or harmful. Fox News also emphasizes issues that resonate strongly with conservative audiences, such as tax cuts, immigration reform, and gun rights. The network's coverage of issues like the Second Amendment, for example, is typically aligned with Republican viewpoints, often advocating for less restrictive gun laws. Additionally, Fox News has been known for its pro-business stance, favoring policies that support deregulation, lower taxes, and a free-market economy—positions that are widely associated with the Republican Party. The network’s selection of guests and analysts further solidifies its Republican leanings. Fox News frequently features conservative politicians, pundits, and former officials from the GOP, including figures like Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, and Senator Lindsey Graham. The network's ability to provide a platform for these voices contributes to its identification with Republican values.

A Youtube video worth watching that shows the rivalry between the two channels: Fox News & CNN Take The Gloves Off

While CNN and Fox News both claim to provide objective news coverage, their political leanings are clear. CNN's liberal bias is reflected in its coverage of progressive issues, its choice of guest commentators, and its critical stance toward conservative figures. Conversely, Fox News is openly conservative, aligning itself with Republican viewpoints and policies, and offering a platform for conservative voices. This political divide in the media reflects the growing polarization in American politics, where news outlets play an increasingly influential role in shaping public opinion and reinforcing ideological divides.
